Scarlett Johansson on Ryan Reynolds Divorce, Hating "ScarJo" Nickname

June 2024 · 2 minute read

Scarlett Johansson is reflecting on what once was. Now pregnant and engaged to French journalist Romain Dauriac, the Under the Skin actress opens up in the new issue of Glamour about her 2010 divorce from Ryan Reynolds, and how her outlook on relationships have changed over the years.

“I feel I know now more of what I need in a relationship, what I want in a relationship,” the 29-year-old says in the May 2014 issue. “And I know I have more tools to communicate, not just with my partner, but with myself.”

“That’s not necessarily any reflection of who I was married to or what was happening in my marriage,” she clarifies, “but really where I was in my life.”

The Captain America star and Reynolds, 37, split in December 2010 after two years of marriage. At the time, an insider told Us the big problem with their relationship was the distance, and the actress was “unhappy for a while.”

The pair remained private throughout their relationship, which is something they’ve continued to do with their new partners. Johansson has kept a low profile with Dauriac, as the twosome spend most of their time in Paris. Last month, it was confirmed they are expecting their first child. Reynolds, meanwhile, secretly tied the knot with Gossip Girl alum Blake Lively, 26, in September 2012.

Johansson’s perspective on relationships may have changed, but it seems she’s at a standstill on how she feels about her “ScarJo” nickname. “I associate that name with, like, pop stars,” she tells Glamour. “It sounds tacky. It’s lazy and flippant.”

“And there’s something kind of violent about it,” she adds. “There’s something insulting about it.”
