He successfully defended his title for the next three years, beating opponents like Hector Camacho and Yori Boy Campas.

In 1999, Trinidad faced Pernell Whitaker in his thirteenth title defense, winning via the judges’ decision. Later that year, he fought Oscar De La Hoya in a controversial match, ultimately winning via the judges’ decision.
