Disney Films Coming in 2024

May 2024 · 6 minute read

As we prepare to ring in the new year, our thoughts naturally turn to all the excitement that’s on the way from Disney in 2024. While there are plenty of surprises on the way in the parks, for this week’s blog we thought we would turn our thoughts to the silver screen (and yes, that includes that silver screen we all have in our living rooms!), and take a peek at the Disney films that are coming our way in 2024.

Marvel Cinematic Universe

Deadpool 3

The third installment of the Deadpool series brings back Ryan Reynolds in the title role, alongside Hugh Jackman (Wolverine), Morena Baccarin (Vanessa), Brianna Hildebrand (Negasonic Teenage Warhead), and Jennifer Garner (Elektra Natchios). As of today, the film is slated for a July 26 release (though that date has moved around quite a bit, so don’t be surprised it moves again in the coming months).

Deadpool 3 is part of the MCU’s Phase Five, which began with Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania and continued with Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, and The Marvels (and will culminate with the film Captain America: Brave New World, currently slated for a February 2025 release). Leslie Uggams will also be reprising her role as Blind Al.

Little is known of the plot as of this writing (beyond idle rumors, which we won’t get into!), but fans of the first two films will surely be in for some more excitement and that Deadpool-brand of humor upon the film’s release.

Echo

The MCU will also be releasing two new miniseries on Disney+ in 2024, beginning with Echo. The series continues the storyline of Hawkeye, with Alaqua Cox reprising her role as Maya Lopex/Echo. It will see Maya return to her hometown where she must come to terms with her past, reconnect with her Native American roots, and embrace her family and community.

Vincent D’Onofrio will also return in his role as Kingpin, and now will now be sporting an eye patch, the result of being shot by Maya in the Hawkeye series.
The 5-episode series will debut on January 9 on Disney+ and Hulu.

Agatha: Darkhold Diaries

Fans of WandaVision and Agatha Harkness can look forward to the exploits of this popular character in the 9-episode series tentatively scheduled to begin toward the end of 2024 as a lead up to Halloween. Kathryn Hahn will return as Agatha, and will be joined by Aubrey Plaza (who will play Rio Vidal, a witch in Harkness’s coven), Joe Locke, Patti LuPone, Sasheer Zamata, Ala Ahn, and Debra Jo Rupp. The series will begin with Agatha finding herself powerless after breaking out of her confinement in Westview, New Jersey. As she sets out on a quest to regain her former powers, she joins up with a group of unlikely allies.

The series was originally going to be called Agatha: House of Harkness and then Agatha: Coven of Chaos before the final title was settled upon. Though little is known of the plot at this time, Debra Jo Rupp (Sharon Davis, a resident of Westview) described the series as the second season of WandaVision, comparing it to American Horror Story in the sense that each season would be a “whole new kind of a thing.”

Pixar

Inside Out 2

The much-anticipated sequel to 2015’s Inside Out is set to be released on June 14. Amy Poehler, Phyllis Smith, and Lewis Black are all back to reprise their roles (as Joy, Sadness, and Anger respectively), and will be joined by Tony Hale (Fear, replacing Bill Hader), Lisa Lapira (Disgust, replacing Mindy Kaling) and Maya Hawke (Anxiety, a new emotion added to the film).

Inside Out 2 takes place in “the mind of newly minted teenager Riley just as headquarters is undergoing a sudden demolition to make room for something entirely unexpected: new Emotions! Joy, Sadness, Anger, Fear and Disgust, who’ve long been running a successful operation by all accounts, aren’t sure how to feel when Anxiety shows up. And it looks like she’s not alone.”

Disney

Mufasa: The Lion King

This film, slated for a December 2024, release is a follow-up to the 2019 remake of The Lion King. Like its predecessor, Mufasa: The Lion King will be brought to life through photorealistic CGI. The story will focus on Mufasa’s younger days, with additional scenes focusing on the events after the first film. Unlike the first remake, the new film will not be a remake of the original animated sequel (The Lion King II: Simba’s Pride, the direct-to-video follow-up that was released in 1998). However, (yes, this gets slightly complicated!), Mufasa: The Lion King WILL see the big screen debut of Mufasa’s granddaughter, Kiara (who appeared in Simba’s Pride). The narrative framework of Mufasa: The Lion King is that Rafiki is telling the story of Mufasa to Kiara.

The film stars Seth Rogan (Pumbaa), Billy Eichner (Timon), and John Kani (Rafiki), all reprising their roles from the first film, along with Aaron Pierre and Kelvin Harrison Jr., who will portray Mufasa and Scar respectively.

In addition, Disney announced the release of an as-yet untitled film scheduled for late November.

Star Wars

Skeleton Crew

While no new full-length theater movies have been announced for 2024, there a few new series heading our way. The first is Skeleton Crew, which is set in the same time period as The Mandalorian. The series will follow the exploits of kids as they try to make their way home after being lost in the galaxy following a discovery they make on their home planet.

Skeleton Crew will star Jude Law, with the parts of the children being played by Ravi Cabot-Conyers, Kyriana Kratter, Robert Timothy Smith, and Ryan Kiera Armstrong

The Acolyte

According to Disney, The Acolyte will be set at the end of the High Republic era in a world of “shadowy secrets and emerging dark side powers”, approximately 100 years before the events of Star Wars: Episode I – The Phantom Menace. The story will revolve around a former Padawan who reunites with her Jedi Master to investigate a series of crimes. They soon find though that the forces they confront are more sinister than they ever anticipated.

The Bad Batch: Season 3

Also on tap for 2024 is the newest season of The Bad Batch an animated spinoff series of The Clone Wars. This will be the final season for the popular series, which follows elite clone troopers taking on mercenary missions around the galaxy.

What movies do YOU look forward to most? There’s lots of excitement on the way, and lots of surprises to be sure. So are you ready? Lights, cameras, ACTION!
