Alisson to miss next few Liverpool games with injury; Jota out a little bit longer

Liverpool goalkeeper Alisson will miss his side’s next few matches, while forward Diogo Jota will be out “a little bit longer” after both sustained injuries during Saturday’s draw against Manchester City.

Alisson pulled his hamstring in the final stages of the 1-1 draw at the Etihad Stadium and is now set for time out of the team.

“We will have to see, not day by day because he cannot play tomorrow or Sunday, and probably not the week after, but then he should be kind of okay,” Liverpool manager Klopp said about Alisson’s injury.

Klopp added Alisson’s problem is not as severe as first feared but “bad enough” as the Brazilian prepares for a spell on the sidelines.

It means Caoimhin Kelleher will fill in, first in the Europa League game with LASK on Thursday — a game he would have started anyway — but then also in the Premier League.

Jota’s hamstring injury is more severe, though. Klopp said: “ Diogo will take a little bit longer, I don’t know exactly how long so we will have to see.”

Despite Alisson’s injury, Klopp has full faith in Republic of Ireland goalkeeper Kelleher deputising in the Brazilian’s absence, tipping the 25-year-old to fulfil his potential.

He said: “Caoimhin gets the opportunity he deserves, He would have played on Thursday anyway but now he gets a few more games and he can show his full potential.”

Goalkeeper Alisson appeared to pick up an issue in the final moments of the draw against City last weekend. The 31-year-old was seen clutching the back of his leg and went down injured before carrying on and seeing out the rest of the match.

Jota, meanwhile, also went down injured during the second half at the Etihad Stadium. The Portugal international, 26, was replaced by Luis Diaz just after the 54th-minute mark.

Liverpool are next in action this Thursday, at home to LASK in the Europa League.
