George ‘Alexander’ Trebek is a famous television personality and a game show host. He is known all over the world for hosting the renowned and fun game show called Jeopardy! from 1984 till 2020 for 37 whole seasons. He is also known for hosting various other shows like The Wizard of Odds, Double Dare, To Tell the Truth, and a few others. Similarly, he has also performed in a few television shows playing himself.

Bio

Alexander was born on the 22nd of July, 1940 in Sudbury, Ontario, Canada. He was born to George Edward Trebek and Lucille Marie Lagace. His father worked as a chef to raise him and his sister. His sister’s name was Barbara Trebek. He grew up speaking two languages i.e. French and English.

Education

Alex Trebek is a very educated man. He used to go to Jesuit schools as a young boy and graduated from Lisgar Collegiate Institute in 1957.

After that, he studied philosophy and received his degree in 1961 from the University of Ottawa. He was interested in extra-curricular activities and was a member of the English Debating Society.

As he was good at public speaking and was very interested in a career in broadcast news, he finally decided to pursue his career in journalism after graduating in 1961.

Alex Trebek doesn’t have a long list of people he has dated in his lifetime. He got in a relationship with Elaine Callie, a businesswoman, and married her in 1974. Since this was Elaine’s second marriage, she had a daughter named Nicky from her former marriage. However, Alex adopted Nicky even though the couple doesn’t have any children together and were unfortunately divorced in 1981.

Similarly, after separating from Elaine, Alex dated Jean Currivan, a real estate project manager, and married her in 1990. The pair were blessed with a son and a daughter named Matthew Trebek and Emily Trebek respectively.

Career

Alex Trebek first hosted a Canadian music program called “Music Job” in 1963. After that, he hosted the show named Double Dare which was his only game show on the CBS network. In the same CBC channel, he commenced his journalistic career as a newscaster and sportscaster. Seeing his work, he soon gained a reputation for being a cool-headed and trustworthy journalist.

In 1996, he became the host of the Canadian quiz show ‘Reach for the Top’, where teams of high school students competed against each other.

After hosting numerous game shows, he became very renowned as a show host and was invited to make guest appearances as a panelist or player on other shows like NBC’s Card Sharks and The Magnificent Marble Machine.

After that Alex Trebek hosted NBC’s Battlestars but the show was canceled in April 1982.

Trebek then again returned to the CBS network which was his first time since Double Dare. There, he hosted a cooking contest titled ‘The Pillsbury Bake-Off’ until 1998.

Trebek started to host Jeopardy! in 1984. It is a unique game show in which contestants are provided with clues in the form of answers. The participants, after they are given the clue, have to phrase their responses in the form of questions.

The show Jeopardy! became very popular and won numerous Daytime Emmy Awards.

Alex Trebek had also set a record by becoming the first person in American broadcast history to host three-game shows at the same time. The three shows were: Jeopardy!, Classic Concentration, and To Tell the Truth.

He was supposed to retire in 2016 but he renewed his contract to continue host the show until 2022.

Achievements

Alex Trebek has won a total of five Daytime Emmy Awards for Outstanding Game Show Host for Jeopardy!. Similarly, he was also honored with the Royal Canadian Geographical Society’s Gold Medal for his contribution to geographical education in 2010.

Likewise, he won the Lifetime Achievement Award from the National Academy of Television Arts & Sciences in 2011. 

Trebek also holds a Guinness World Record for holding most episodes of a game show, hosting 6,829 episodes of Jeopardy! on June 13, 2014.

Similarly, he was awarded the 2019 Americanism Award by the Daughters of the American Revolution.
